Disorder
Alzheimer
dementia or Alzheimer disease is among many impairments of the brain
and nervous system that not only affect the individual suffering
from this condition but the entire family. Memory failure is a hallmark
of Alzheimer’s, however, other symptoms include agitation,
depression, combat-iveness, suspiciousness, refusal to eat to and
resistance to care.
Contrary to common belief, not all disorders of
memory are caused by Alzheimer’s disease, nor are all dementia
and memory disorders irreversible. Reversible causes such as inadequate
nutrition or other physical causes should be considered during a
complete evaluation.
The Alzheimer and Memory Disorder Clinic at Okaloosa
Mental Health And NeuroPsychiatric Center is designed to address
all causes and all types of care for patients with Alzheimer and
other memory disorders. Evaluation of patients begins with a consultation
with the Neuropsychiatrist (a doctor specializing in diseases of
the mind and nervous system). Depending on this consultation, diagnostic,
clinical, and neuropsychological testing might be arranged to develop
a treatment plan that could include medication, counseling, therapy,
and family evaluation and living environment evaluation. Due to
the progressive nature of memory disorders, the treatment programs
are continuously updated and new recommendations are made to the
patient and family.
