Depression
and Bipolar Disorders are among a group of medical and psychiatric
disorders generally referred to as mood disorders. Terms such as
manic depression or cyclothymia are examples of mood disorders.
The hallmark of this group of disorders is pathological
states of mood. Moods can range from the extreme of complete depression
to the opposite extreme of complete mania. Depression can vary from
low-level depression, with individuals exhibiting a general reduction
of activity and interest for life, to an extreme state of sadness,
apathy, lack of enjoyment and even lack of interest for survival.
The complete manic state, marked by unrealistic expectations, hyperactivity
and unfounded grand plans, can be equally dangerous.
While these conditions are serious medical concerns,
they are usually treatable conditions. This group of disorders may,
at times, require life-long medical care and management just as
certain forms of diabetes need life-long medical care. If left untreated,
both depression and bipolar disorder can lead to disability and
disruption of personal and family life, alcohol and other drug abuse,
and occupational difficulties. The Depression and Bipolar Disorder
Clinic at Okaloosa Mental Health And NeuroPsychiatric Center is
designed to provide specialized medical, psychiatric and mental
health services for this group of disorders.
The process of evaluation and management of depression
and bipolar disorders begins with an initial consultation with a
psychiatrist. Based on this consultation, a treatment plan is arranged
that may include clinical and psychological testing, use of medications,
individual group and family therapy, and other medical services
as deemed necessary.
