Developmental Mental Health
and NeuroPsychiatry

THE PROBLEM:

Developmental disabilities include a group of severe and long-standing conditions that include mental and physical impairments severely limiting self-sufficiency and reliance for independent living. These disorders usually begin and continue through the developmental years of the individual.

It is estimated that some 50 million Americans suffer from activity limitations and disabilities that are associated with long-term physical and or mental disorders. The ill-effects of these disorders on the mind-body interaction can make this condition difficult to manage. Management is mostly complicated by the individual’s communication problems and mental limitations, making negotiation of care and management difficult, thus placing even more demands on care givers and the developmentally disabled individual.

There are many forms of developmental disabilities; among them are: Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Hearing and Visual Impairments, Autism, Rett’s Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, Spina Bifida, and Prader-Willi Syndrome

THE SOLUTION:

Simply treating the physical or mental condition of the individual with a developmental disability is inadequate and only adds to the problem. An integrated medical service addressing both the mental and physical aspects of developmental disability is the most effective and preferred way to manage this problem. Contrary to popular belief, individuals with developmental disorders do not have to be dysfunctional. Comprehensive medical care of these individuals, including physical, mental and vocational rehabilitation can assist in restoration of function and integration of the individual into family and community.
