THE DISEASE
Men
and women alike are affected by this progressive disorder that
constrains the lives of some 1.5 million people in the United
States. Parkinson’s disease is named after Doctor James
Parkinson, who originally described the disease in 1817. Parkinson’s
disease initially causes abnormal and reduced movement, rigidity,
and tremors. It gradually leads to disturbances in speech, swallowing,
walking, posture, and balance. Ultimately anxiety, depression,
mental confusion, forgetfulness, disability and dependence, may
follow.
It is the progressive and changing nature of
this disease that has devastating effects on the patients and
their families. This contributes to making the evaluation and
management of Parkinson’s disease a medical challenge. As
the disease progresses, newer treatments beyond medication management
should be employed to alleviate the patient’s pain and suffering
and afford ability to function independently.
THE EVALUATION AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Although a cure for Parkinson’s disease
has yet to be discovered, effective medications, therapy, and
rehabilitation measures are available to restore the chemistry
of the brain, keep the progression of Parkinson’s disease
in check, and rehabilitate the patient with Parkinson’s
disease to their full potential to function.
The comprehensive Parkinson’s Management
Program, PMP, at Okaloosa NeuroPsychiatric Center is designed
to meet the specialized medical service needs of patients with
Parkinson’s disease.
The Parkinson’s Management services are
provided by a specialized team of medical and clinical professionals,
each contributing in their special area of service in tandem with
an overall goal of monitoring the progression of the disease and
restoring the patient’s potential abilities.
THE PROCESS OF EVALUATION BEGINS WITH A CONSULATION
WITH THE NEUROPSYCHIATRIST. Depending on this evaluation, a personalized
program is designed to meet the special needs of each patient.
This may include medication management, speech and mobility services,
treatment for anxiety and depression, family and caregiver education,
stress management, and other rehabilitative services.
